About Us

Just Moms STL and Missouri Coalition for the Environment (MCE) have partnered to create the STL Toxic Waste Alliance. We believe it is every person’s right to know the communities in which they live, work, worship, or play are safe and free from hazardous and radioactive wastes. Through outreach and training sessions, the alliance aims to inform residents about the contaminants in their neighborhood and ultimately empower citizens to advocate for clean-up and public health protections. We will also work to advance life-saving policies that protect future generations from further harm.

The Alliance’s main areas of focus are the Bridgeton West Lake Landfill, Coldwater Creek, and Maline Creek.

“We’re here because of the West Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, Missouri. It’s an EPA Superfund site. There’s an underground landfill fire burning across from 50,000 tons of radioactive waste. The stench is horrible. People within a half-mile radius of the site can get chronic nosebleeds, watery eyes, and sore throats. If the waste and fire ever meet, the schools will have to go into a shelter-in-place because the meeting will create a ‘dirty bomb’ of radioactive particles. We don’t know how far these particles will go; it’s impossible to predict, because it depends on the wind. Just Moms STL is fighting this, but Republic Services, which owns the landfill, subpoenaed them. Women’s Voices achieves our mission through education and advocacy. Our program committee selects a variety of knowledgeable speakers to provide information on a variety of social justice issues. Programs are held on the second Thursday of each month, September through May, at 7 p.m. at The Center of Clayton (50 Gay Ave., Clayton, MO 63105).
